What is Acne?

Blackheads, whiteheads and larger spots appear mainly on the face, but are sometimes found on the neck, upper chest, back and upper arms. They come in cycles, with some spots healing while others are appearing.

What causes Acne?

Small glands in the skin - sebaceous glands - produce an oily/waxy substance called sebum, which helps protect skin and hair. The openings to these glands on the skin surface - pores - can become blocked with a mixture of dead skin and sebum, allowing infection to take root. Pus builds up behind the blockage and the gland swells. Eventually, the pressure forces the pus out of the pore. Permanent scarring may occur in some cases of severe acne or if it lasts a long time.
